djoxyk: thank you for explanation! Will start with the old version then.

Enneagon: Old is hard to run on newer windows, but is more artsy pleasing, more stylish and better feel, imho.

Bugs, only what I can point out, at least two artifacts behave weird enough to be considered bugs. Thing that claim to speed up explorer travel stops fog from being removed from map, definitely a bug. Thing that claim to prevent bad luck, also prevents good luck; not strictly necessary a bug, but you don't want to have it. Probably there some more, but in the overall randomness of the game really minor bugs are easy to miss.
Maybe the fact that all immigrants children are considered newborns may be seen as a bug too.
I think there is at least one major bug, related to a boss-type enemy (one of the "ancient enemies" you can have). IIRC the bug actually results in you not getting a game over when you should, so it's probably not going to bother you.

Might be worth checking the wiki on KODP, but careful you don't spoil yourself doing it - game's much more fun going in blind.

That's not an issue, I'll run it on Linux with wine wrapper, it can mimic any windows OS, even 3.1 :)
as for bugs, I believe these are minor, after years of playing Morrowind and Oblivion I'm not easily scared by some minor glitches :)
One thing that wasn't added to this list, but a huge deal was made about it in the new version over on Steam: Because you can't adjust crafters, you can't achieve a pacifist victory (in other words, one without raiding).

I'm sure there are other small strategies you can't do anymore due to all the other micromanagement removal, but I don't really know of them.

It would be a difficult path (since your warriors like to be warriors and earn loot and glory), but I would be surprised if you can’t win without raiding.

Adjusting crafters has nothing to do with it - if anything adjusting crafters wasted a "turn", since not adjusting them meant sub-optimal wealth generation, while in the new version the number is always automatically adjusted to be optimal.

I was always under the impression that having too many crafters meant that you would produce more than you could sell (dependent on your market, trade partners, and crafting resources you'd discovered), which would actually lead to less goods, not more - unless I'm mistaken on that part.

At any rate, the fact we can't adjust crafters any more, and also the fact we can't adjust crop types any more - are two of the reasons I prefer the new version, despite the minor things I personally believe aren't as good (UI and lack of village overview).
Is there any way to have the best of both worlds? Or versions, as the case may be... Can I play the old version with it's more complex mechanics of farming and crafting and holistic UI, but WITH the new events and artwork etc?

No.
