Greetings,

I just bought KoDP today; and, so far, I have been highly pleased with it.
With the exception of one minor issue that whenever I try to load a saved game (after having shut down the game, mind you, loading saves works fine as long as I don't quit completely), it crashes back to desktop.
So, question is: Is this a known bug, or is there any way to prevent this? It is, after all, rather frustrating, since the game literally seems to require days to beat.

I'm on Win7 32, by the way, though I presume (or hope) the choice of OS would not influence this behavior.

Thank you for reading.
Hi, sorry to hear you're having problems. I'll do my best to see if this can be resolved ASAP :D

Can you tell me what directory you have the game installed in?

Please make sure to install the game outside the Program Files folder. The Program Files folder is a protected folder and many of our older games, such as King of Dragon Pass, may have issues that crop up when installed into that location.

Back up your saves, uninstall the game, re-install it but delete the Program Files part of the install directory during installation, copy your saves into the same directory that the KODP.exe resides in and you should be good to go. Please let me know if this helps! :D

Not sure if this applies to the GOG.com version, but the FAQ http://a-sharp.com/kodp/faq.html has

“Some Windows users have had trouble with being able to save but not find their saved games. Apparently this can occur when the path to the saved game includes a space. Saving to My Documents or anything under it doesn’t work. Saving to C:\KoDP\Game1\ and the like is fine.”
Thank you both for your input. (=

Unfortunately, in this case at least, I am well aware of both the issues you presented.
I install my games in a seperate folder on a seperate partition. Hence, this is the first game, which takes offense with my wanting to innocently load previously saved game states--and, I cannot stress this enough, after the game had been completely shut down and reinitiated.
Also, the problem is not that I cannot find the saved games--they are there, with no spaces in the filename, inside the main game folder--they will not load as the game crashes almost immediately.

My first thought was, and maybe I should have mentioned this, there might be a problem with the game running in windowed mode; however, exstensive testing resulted in this not being the case.

Again, thank you for your help.
Ok, this is kind of stupid, but I found a solution after fiddling with compatibility options again.
The game, it seems, did not like to be run in Win XP compatibility mode--did not think this possible. Turning the option off fixes the crash issue.
First game I know of that causes problems in compatibility mode rather than Win7 ... or maybe it's opposite day. (=

I have several old games that don't like compatibility mode and I only use as last resort. My game is installed on Win7 x64, and I never touched that configuration, played right on, it never gave me any trouble.
Live and learn, I guess.

Btw, I like pre-2000 games as much as the next guy, yet KoDP is the first to bitch about compatibility mode.

Thanks, this solved my problem! I had turned compatibility mode on to test something and forgot that I had set it on. My saves weren't loading, but I turned it off and its working now!

I had the same problem and doing this immediately fixed the crashing for me.

Thanks for sharing how you fixed the problem!
