So I'm early on and having a few issues.

One of the big ones is that adjusting my thrust doesn't seem to effect my engines. In the tutorials, if I used my keystrokes to turn my thrust to 0 or MAX, my engines would promptly cut out. I could head toward peri / apo and either go full throttle or 0 throttle at a moments notice and my engine would shut off / go to full power.

Now that I'm playing the game, this doesn't seem to be the case. I'm certainly properly staged, and using an engine that can be turned on / off. But I'm having issues with my throttle keystrokes. I can hit the "Zero Throttle" key, and the throttle meter on screen will go to the bottom, by my ship won't actually turn off it's engine.

I can manually "deactivate" the engine by right clicking, but sometimes this isn't ideal for fine control. I miss being able to hit the key for 0 throttle and being able to shut off my engine. Now, my throttle goes to 0 on the little display in the lower left corner, but the actual engine won't shut off. What am I missing?

Electricity maybe? Try placing batteries and/or solar panels and see if it fixes your problem. While engines generate energy, there were a lot of cases where it wasn't enough with some of my designs as RCS/SAS drain the energy quickly, especially when in dark.

Thanks for getting back to me both of you. I think it was just some sort of odd one-off glitch. Next time I started up the game everything worked fine (and has since worked fine) again.

Vythonaut I actually went back to look at electricity because one of the threads I found on the Kerbal forum mentioned it (I did a search for my issue). I hadn't been running SAS and I'm still very early in the game so it's really a basic model rocket - I didn't think it would be an issue.

So weird glitch I guess that seems to have worked itself out. No issues since - well except for me slowly working my way through what I'm doing ;)

Is you vehicle manned by kerbal? If you have Kerbal Network enabled, there is an option for partial or no control on AI control units that loose connection to the KSC. With partial control, you can only 1/0 the engine. With "no control" it won't even respond.

Glad you figured it out! As for electricity, I guess at some point you'll find yourself in a position where your vehicle will be uncontrollable due to insufficient electric power (unmanned modules, reaction wheels, rover wheels, SAS, RCS, all do consume electric power), so keep an eye on it and make sure your designs have some means of replenishing power such as solar panels or RTG.
It really sounded like a staging problem. For example, if you throttle up, then stage a decoupler, your discarded stage engine will still be at full power, and will "push" your upper stage, so that it looks like you're not decoupled, and you can't control the discarded stage engine anymore.

Another possibility is that maybe you used a solif fuel booster? Those can't be controled and will always be on maximum thrust power (But that "maximum thrust" can be adjusted before the flight, which is handy when you want to get a longer, softer thrust from a booster)

Those are two "newbie errors" that did cost me a fair number of ships (and still do, when I'm not vigilant enough)

Same issue here, just another of a million bugs that make this otherwise great game so frustrating...wouldn't be so bad if it didn't take 3 minutes to quit the program and 10 minutes to reload it each time
