I am wondering when exactly my characters will use their Katanas in a fight, especially since being indoors gives heavy weapons a negative bonus. It seems to me that characters use their main weapons exclusively. Do I have to unequip their main weapons manually or is there something else I can do?

"It works like this.

Top slot: is the main weapon, you can also have 2 but will always use the best quality one.
Bottom slot: secondary weapon, used only when unable to use the primary (indoors or if you lose 1 arm and can't wield a 2hander.)"

Also, characters with ranged weapons will use the secondary weapon slot if the enemy gets to close.
