Jazz Jackrabbit 2 had been ported to macOS as well back at its original release. Are there any plans to bring the one on GOG.com as well?

It can be run with virtualisation of course, but since I guess the current developers has the original source code, it would not be too hard to compile it for macOS too.

Anyhow thanks for your great work preserving this important piece of game history!
That's not quite how it works. Jazz Jackrabbit was made back when Macs were running RISC. Now they're running on RISC again, but via ARM. Even if it was possible to compile, there's a swathe of architecture differences and over a decade of code between the two.
The original source code is not in possession by anyone with an interest in doing anything with it, not for Mac OR Windows. Recompilation is not currently an option.
Right now, the best way to play Jazz Jackrabbit 2 on macOS is to use deathkiller's open source port, Jazz2 Resurrection. You do need libopenmpt and Mono to compile and innoextract to pull the JJ2 files out of the installer and point Import.exe to the data folder and it should just import the files with ease.

Compilation instructions are provided on the project's homepage.

Can confirm, does work in Linux with no compile needed; and did update today.

WINE is probably a better option until J2R is more complete.

I hear a lot of people have had a lot of success configuring WINE to make JJ2 work really well on Linux and Mac.

As for the original MacOS port, as noted before, it's for much older Macs that used a different architecture, so it won't run on modern Macs.
You're better off just using CrossOver. It's the simplest way to getting JJR2 working on modern Macs using an M-series processor.

Jazz2 resurrection feels and plays vastly different than the original game. The best way to play the game with the same feel is JJ2+. It adds tons of custimization, content and bug fixes.
