I get to this point where I can't jump high enough, and I'm not sure how to use the mini helicopter thingy. I press every button I can and I'm not equipping it or anything. Screenshot attached.

This is a bug with standard JJ2. If you get JJ2+ (GOG provides a download of Plus, or you can install it manually) you will be able to use the helicopter thing by just walking into it.
