Like my topic mentions, I'm about to buy JA2 after 11 years of never having played such a classic (I know, I should get lapidated for that!) but to redeem myself I am willing to make acquaintance with this little gem.
Therefore my question lies in the simplicity of this: should I start a new game as is, or install the more than famous 1.13 patch and play with that instead? I read it adds and changes quite a lot, so, as a newbie to this game (but not to the tactical strategy games, I've played X-Com quite a bit), will I get my ass handed to me in a plate of gold the minute I load the game for the first time, or not?
Cheers for helping me out and any tips are welcome! :)

I would recommend just playing the game as is for starters and as you've played xcom before you should be fine with this. The same sort of rules apply use cover and don't run around in the open like a maniac.
Bummer, no running around imitating Rambo... :(

Unfortunatly not, you can imitate Robocop before he became a robot though ;)
Lmao, alright! :) Cheers mate, I'll give you news this weekend and tell you how much I fared against those pesky enemies!
Oh my fu*** god, this game is drug! :D Still exploring all the stuff you can do, but WOW! Why haven't I played that 10 years ago!? Was I stupid or just stupid!?

I felt that way with both this and X-com I missed out on both because I was too busy playing stuff like starcraft. The closet game I had to these ages ago was chaos gate which while fun isn't anywhere near as deep.
