Curious how this works. I haven't obtained camo yet, but how do units get discovered by enemies? Reading the manual, I understand that the Exp Level of a merc affects how well he sneaks. So I have a few questions:
1) Is there any indication to show whether my merc has made any noise while sneaking?
2) Is there a difference in sneaking while running, and sneaking while crouching, and sneaking while prone?
3) Why is it that the enemy will always discover my merc the moment he/she sneaks out of cover? I have a situation that goes like this: an enemy has spotted Buns, so I quickly send her to a nearby cover. I use Igor to distract the enemy, and the enemy concentrates on Igor instead. So, I send Buns into prone position to sneak up behind the enemy. However, when I end turn the enemy has detected my presence, turns around, and shoots Buns. What's up with that?
4) Is there any difference whether I sneak on different surfaces? Will sneaking on grass have a different effect compared to sneaking on gravel or sand?

1) I think you hear that noice yourself as well. At least it was that way in JA1.
2) Walking and running makes your more visible than crouching which makes you more visible than proning.
3) I don't know.
4) High grass in combination with camouflage should decrease the chance of being discovered.
Some mercs like Shadow or better with sneaking and using cover than others.
First I assume you use the 'sneaking feature' by pressing Z or moving button so it's turn yellow? It significantly reduces the noise merc cause while moving.
1) Yes you hear the sound yourself, but there's no any visible indicator, I think. (But not sure if 1.13 mod have some..)
2) I have understood that mercs make lesser noise while moving slower in sneakmode (ie. silent running compared to silent crouching). Usually enemies spot my mercs if they're running while sneaking.
3) Enemies, who has their own position where to stay, they don't move, just turning around for all of their action points and looking any signs for troubles. Maybe that enemy just turned for that direction at wrong time?
And only couple of (master of sneaking) mercs could really prone behind any soldiers without being seen. Usually I don't have money for those mercs, so at that situation I usually use knives or get close behind some obstacle and next turn run silently and slit target's throat. Works well mostly. :)
4) See post above.
