How do I have mercs turn and look around without actually moving?

Alt-l is quickload, and Alt-s is quicksave. If you've alt-tabbed out, when you return ingame the alt is still considered pressed (so your mercs will also walk backwards). Tap alt again, to return it to normal state, then press l and where you want to look towards.

Also, there is a button in the GUI that looks like a curved arrow (right click on the portrait icon for the active character and there are a bunch of smaller buttons for every action from climbing up or down to changing stance (from 'standing' to 'crouched' to lying down etc.) etc.). That enables changing your facing to another direction.
