If you don't like the 1.13 mod then go back to the 1.12 unmodded version and play that.

Yes it's harder, that's life ! Play at Beginner level if you need.
To counter the difficulty you can create several IMPs that start with decent guns (MPs), and recruit a good AIM merc with the money. Also you can set "drop all loot" on any time and use the SMGs and Rifles the enemies against them afterwards. Really it's not that hard at the lower levels. Another tip : sniping rules :o)
I've said it earlier in another thread:
If you're new to JA2, don't start with the 1.13 mod.
Start with 1.12 to get to know the game, the tricks, the play, etc.
Once you got the hang of it, upgrade to 1.13.
No v1.13 does not act like that unless you have played with the settings or modded it somewhere. I can train militia faster in v1.13 then I did in vanilla. Also the merc you use has a lot to do with training militia as well. If the merc/s you are using dont have the teacher ability then it will take longer to train so... use merc/s with teacher ability and you will see a huge difference. Another thing to look at is Leadership stat. If that is lower then say 60 they will train militia slow as well.

In 1.13 training was purposely extended (game too easy for the devs i think), but I'm pretty sure there is an option in the Ini file to modify how long it takes to train a squad. This time would then be modified by the trainers Leadership stat and Trainer skills if they have them.
I remember having fun after reducing training time to 1 hour and having a full set of veterans in about 3 hours :).
In the 1.13 ini file, you have a trigger that says something like "slow progress for enemy equipment" (or something approaching, I've haven't the game installed right now). It's off by default. If you turn it to "yes" the enemy will keep its low quality weapons longer.
But if you think Thompons are a problem, wait before you face Abakans, HKs, FAMAS and sniper rifles (Vintorez anyone ?) that will blow your head before you even know what happened.
In this mod, kickass weaponry never comes in short supply. That's the fun of it.
Exactly. It's a mod made by seasoned JA2 players for other seasoned JA2 players, made harder in some ways but balanced by making it somewhat easier in others. But the great thing about it is that it gives you a ton of options to adjust the difficulty to suit you, often if very subtle ways, like increasing the line of sight range or allowing more than two mercs per sector to train militias. Admittedly most of these options are buried in the ini files, so it can be a bit of a pain to tweak them.
