Create your custom merc. Wisdom maxed on 85, everything else at about normal settings or lowever to max markmanship on 85.
Don't hire mercs.
Clean out Omerta with 1 merc and go get Ira.
Have Ira and your IMP merc take all the gear the enemies dropped and go to San Mona.
First to the most eastern sector to check the bar and talk to Angel.
Than to the next sector to get rid of Brenda in the video store (by killing her or giving her a porn vid).
Than to Tony to buy and sell guns and ammo you don't need.
Talk to Kyle.
After that to check the bar for NPC traders.
As I always sneak into the backdoor at Madam Layla's, I don't go there yet but save it for later in the game.
Check the rest of the sector and go to Estoni afterwards.
Talk to Jake, sell him the rest of the unwanted gear.
You can buy guns and ammo from him to sell to Tony with a profit.
Give some junk to Skipper to get the keycard.
Hire Maddog and go back to San Mona (I prefer the sector Tony is in, but that's personal).
If you're lucky you have 1 or 2 Mini-14's at this point.
Assign the mercs to student to start training your mercs to be ubers (no need for trainers and ignore the message they're done).
This process will take hours in real time!
While doing so at some point you 'll get an e-mail from Speck.
You might consider hiring Grunty as you can make a terminator out of him.
This will however cost you more and more cash as he rises in level.
Once Ira and your IMP merc have all settings maxed at 85, Maddog will still be far from that.
Personallly I hate waiting for him to be ready so I don't train all his settings to max, just the ones I find useful.
Basically that means markmanship, mechanical and health to 85. Dexterity, strenght and agility to at least 75 if the time is there. For Maddog I don't care about other settings. With these settings he makes a great backup.
Ones that's done drop all gears except weapons, ammo and armor.
Go to Tixa and free Shank and Dynamo.
Take as much stuff with you as you can (I destroy what I can't take) and go back to Estoni.
Sell the gear you don't need to Jake.
In addition you might want to buy the weapons and ammo he has.
Go back to Tony and sell the guns and ammo you don't want or need.
Train Maddog, Shank and Dynamo further till they fit your needs.
As they have low wisdom it takes them longer so you might need to conquer Chitzena and train militia there in order to keep your cashflow healthy.
While you're at it you might as well take the SAM site to sectors south of Chitzena.
Once the slow learners are at a level you like, go for Drassen and play out the rest of the game.
This way you'll have an easy start in the game.
As you don't hire anyone at the start, you'll add a little extra difficulty once the game is on it's way and you'll need some extra fire power or some mercs with good skills.
The mercs you hire than will still be at a relatively low level as they won't have had the time to become better.
Note that the above won't get you a good lock picker and as far as explosives go, you need to be careful too.
You can use a merc with high wisdom to plant and defuse mines once you found 1 or more.
