In Jagged Alliance 1 how do you deal with the enemy when they hide behind a wall of trees and are still able to fire upon and score regular hits on your mercs?
Everytime i return fire i never get a hit and have to trek around to an opening so i can get a decent chance of taking them out.
Im used to the enemy being able to snipe with handguns from JA2, but at least i could postion myself for a return shot, having to negotiate a maze of trees while under fire is starting to wear thin and im running out of bandages for my squad.

Yeah i think i just need to take a more patient approach to some of the combat situations instead of rushing in and getting a grump on when my ass is handed to me.
I actually had a wounded enemy run away from me and when i gave chase into some woodland i found myself in a crossfire with two of his buddys hiding in the trees. I dunno if this was the A.I or just bad luck on my part but the game sure makes you work for some of the sectors.

Grenade? I also vaguely remember the luring tactic as efficient - hide somewhere the enemy can't see you and fire a few shots into the ground. They'll come to investigate, you get the interrupt, they get a bullet between the eyes.

i was stockpiling my grenades, but yeah they prove to be a great equaliser when involved in firefights in wooded areas and seem to generally hit their target.

It's an option.
Personally I never needed them and often used them to open doors if I couldn't lockpick them.

i didn't even know you could blow the doors open. so much about this game im still finding out, i just figured out what the F9 key does..

I'll bite - what does it do ? Quickload ?
AFAIK - in most games quicksaving/loading is either F5/F6 or F5/F9...
Edit: or maybe it selects the entire team, quite like using L-hold+R-click ?
Makes sense if F1-F8 was assigned to different teammates...

it lets you know which of your mercs have a line of sight with those red shirted buggers, you can toggle it on and off.

DAMN, this is useful... Also - you can switch between the red-shirts with ENTER (and your teammates with the SPACEBAR).
Sure - both views have their merits - team view shows you everyone anyone sees and lets you plan ahead... while the personal view is a HUGE help in figuring out which of your mercs has the line of fire clear. Sure - they CAN shoot at things they don't see, but I bet their accuracy is less than acceptable then. Also - I HOPE it's always possible to hit what they can see...

Below you find a possible spoiler.
Later on in the game you can shoot them open if you use an M14 or M16 and modify it with a chunk of steal.
Note that shooting doors open doesn't always work and definitely not will al weapons.
Modifying weapons increases the weapon's range and damage and changes it's looks and sound.
Weapons to modify are M14, M16 and Magnums (only 1 of those).
Somewhere in game you can find a modified Beretta.
You might find a modified Magnum as well, but I'm not sure.
The advantage of a modified Magnum is that you can attach a silencer.
