I have a boxed version of Jade Empire (special edition? something like that, purchased around 2008) unopened.

Is the gog version better, aside from a lack of drm, would rebuying it be worth it?

Don't think there's any difference other than the DRM free thing But if you haven't played the game for 4 years why are you looking to buy another copy? That's just silly..

I like having digital backups of games I already own as boxed versions. Those CDs/DVDs won't live forever and DRM prevents backups in some cases. Though I don't think GOG's version offers anything new except for maybe some extras:
- artbook 18 MB
- artworks 11 MB
- avatars 1 MB
- manual 1 MB
- soundtrack (MP3) 108 MB
- wallpapers 15 MB

Depends if you want a digital back-up or not.

Same here, and also sometimes the reverse -- I bought the Infinity Engine games on disc after buying the games here. Still looking for a disc copy of Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich to go with my copy of the original FF.
