I didn't find a button to quit anywhere and i'm guessing there really ins't one.
Abandonia also mentions the game having no button to quit...
As for the old days, those were the Dark Ages my friend, i don't even want to know what they had to do to quit the game. ;)

CTRL + X. Found it in the Ishar 1 manual, works for Crystals of Arborea too.
