Maybe I am getting spoiled by the newer games but how do I create my own character? Evey time I start the game there is already a default character. I find it rather hard to relate to the party when none of the party member are my own avatar.

I wouldn't say you're spoiled by newer games, because most old RPGs of this type let you create the entire party. :p
As far as I know, there's no character creation in Ishar. All of the characters are premade, including the starting character.
