I mean I've read that you can have less "score", but found myself enjoying the game (as a beginner) more on Easy difficulty.
Also, the achievements are working properly.

So what is the purpose/perk for playing on harder difficulties?

Well, some people enjoy the challenge that comes with the higher difficulty, even if it means they'll die many more times because any mistakes will be more punishing. Others feel rewarded that they managed to beat it on Hard. Of course the x2 score is a great incentive for those who are after high scores. And i'm pretty sure there is an achievement for beating the game on Hard, although i didn't check that.
Thank you, I'm also sure there are achievements for playing on Hard. Nevertheless, I'll stay at Easy for a while until I don't make so many noob mistakes. ;)

Sounds like a good plan; that way you'll be able to learn the game mechanics well enough to tackle the increased difficulty later. And just for the record, just checked out the achievements and it turns that an achievement for beating the game on Hard it does exist. :)

Thought so. :)
Actually, I started on Normal, but figured that I learn more if I pay close attention on Easy, and maybe after a few upgrades, I'll start normal.

Also, I still don't understand the permanent upgrades' mechanism, so that comes first. :)

There are none.
You unlock pilots by meeting them in-game and achievements are stars to buy new squads.
You may carry over a surviving pilot from a playthrough to the other and they will keep their stats. But you don't have to, you can choose whoever you've unlocked already (at 0XP).
And that's it, no permanent upgrade.

Yes, thank you for the clarification.
I've also noticed that if I retire from a campaign, the surviving pilots keep their EXP.
