I've only played on normal so far, medium galaxy, with 50% research speed across all empires. Even with this i find I'm cruising down the research tree mid game (turn 100-150~). Even the AI seem to be quite far down the line when they ask to trade tech. Is there a combination of setting anyone can recommend so powerful research tech is more a late game goal? I feel if i up the difficulty the AI is gonna just zoom right past me. I like spending time expanding and fighting with the lower tech before slinging titans all over.

Hi, you can use the research slider to adjust the research speed of your empire, and the AI's, between the default values of 50% to 200%, with 25% increments. Or, you can set a custom value between 1% and 300% by clicking in the input text field to the right of the slider.

Values below 50% or above 200% may result in an unbalanced and very different experience for many players, but since you're after very low research speeds, then you can always try the value you like below 50%, for you and/or the AIs.

Woah i didn't know about the custom values! Thank you for letting me know. Also, I feel a little foolish as now having played hard mode, things do go slower because the war is more intense as well as expanding. I did get steamrolled my first game lol.
