Stampede: GIotto I love you, it acutally works for me!

Great, have fun!

Razormouth: Despite Giotto's workaround, I still cannot get I76 to launch. It'll run under software mode fine without any extra help, but the sound is incredibly buggy. Using the -glide or -d3d tag do no good; each time I'll get a message saying "Failed to initialize hardware acceleration."
My specs are:
Windows 7 64-bit
ATI HD 5770
4 GB RAM
AMD Phenom II X4 B55
At this point I'm putting my blame on ATI. Before I got the ATI card I had an Nvidia that worked okay with the game. Now I can't get it to even load.

I think I got the same error ("Failed to initialize hardware acceleration") when I missed a step in my workaround. But it has been a few months since I last played the game.
Have you tried starting the game with the .bat file (after completing the other steps)?

You don't normally have to actually kill explorer "Desktop Window Manager Session Manager" is generally the culprit so just create a .bat file containing the following
net stop uxsms
pause
net start uxsms
Start your game as you normally would.
I guess if you aren't bothered about the pretties you could probably disable uxsms permanently using the service management tool.

I double-checked everything, and still no joy. I wouldn't care as much if the sound worked fine, but under software mode the sound gets wonky.
I76Giotto's tutorial seems to have worked for me. I played for 5-6 minutes on each game and had no texture errors @ 1920x1200 on win7.
