Honest question here, why are you looking forward to this game and what gameplay elements do you think makes it good?
This question / problem has been solved by Essobieimage
Because it's never been bettered.
The presentation style was awesome. that was plain from the intro "credits".
The world they created is unique and has an awesome style.
The story is pretty good, and the voice acting and characters are great.
The combat is a very nice blend of Tie Fighter + Racing game, and has enough sim elements to make it more than just "blast everything in site" but is also movie-style enough to allow you to do massive jumps over gorges.
Almost everything about it just feels right. Even the virtual cockpit and the way you can see your gun when you aim out the side windows.
Of course, the engine had a few weaknesses, a few of the missions were rather tricky, and the enemy AI was pretty poor. But none of that mattered because everything else was so great and so immersive.
Plus, the car is freakin cool!

Awesome visual style and the game-play was great fun.
Most other vehicular combat games were too arcade like for my taste. I thought of I'76 at the time as being Mad-Max like. Proper chases were possible, it wasn't just "catch up in 5 seconds and blow them up" but it wasn't so far the other way that the physics got in the way.
I can't think of anything else that has done it better since!
EDIT: Should mention that I'82 and beyond totally dropped the ball and played more like twisted metal. . . not that I didn't enjoy twisted metal, but had I wanted that style of game, I would have played twisted metal :D

This was one of the very few games that understood the limitations of the technology at the time to really come up with an art style that worked.
The knew they wouldn't be able to pull off high poly character models and animate them well enough for the story they wanted to tell, so they simply didn't put mouths on anyone.
The game had some serious drawbacks in the multiplayer aspects (no way to balance car loadouts, completely obscure way of doing locational damage for mortars, peer to peer networking resulting in people lag-ramming each other, etc.). It'll be interesting to see how well the game plays over Himachi or whatever solution they may have come up with for the GOG release.
But frankly I just want to play through the single player campaign again on my new computer with an expensive joystick. I played this game originally on something like a Pentium 100 and maybe got 15fps the whole time. I'm really hoping to see hundreds and hundreds of fps now.
The Cutscenes are the greatest thing ever. Perfect voiceover, and though the whole scene has so few polygons even a C64 could handle it (kidding :), the creators have achieved an art style that is really exceptional.
The game was also incredibly fun to play. Just the right amount of physics, so you could do all the moves you liked from your favorite movie car chases, but not so much that you could not concentrate on the task at hand.
The missions were varied and fit into the story (while even having a story is exceptional today).
I still can't believe it's coming :) Great!
Pulling of a perfect one-shot drive-by leaving your enemy slumped over his steeringwheel with his head on the horn is so rewarding.
Also, just cruising with a stripped car on some maps is just great fun.
Just a month or two ago I installed Interstate (again, after soooo many years) and tried to get it working! I wonder if this version is working perfectly, the original old version just wasn't playable on WinXP, Core2Duo etc. But I got steering wheel and 3dfx textures working!
The poetry button.
Looking out the window of your room onto a wet rainy day.
Main street under a slate gray afternoon sky.
The light on your face is soft and dim under the lace curtain, and the streets are empty.
In a distance, there is a flash and a rumble.
Clouds sail the sky like giant wooden ships on a blackened evergreen sea, capped with foam.

Yep, I can still remember the first poem that came up when you hit 'c'
Why do I want i76? It was the best game ever made. The perfect amalgam of gameplay and style. Enough simulation to create strategic choices, engaging storyline and characters, and an original funk soundtrack that still makes my playlists 15 years later.
The game had problems with modern operating systems and processors, so I'm looking forward to being able to run it on current systems. GoG says that IP address based multiplayer should work, and I'm thrilled.

If I remember correctly there were never any one-shot drive-bys. The only way you could kill someone with your handgun is if their car's armor bar was showing red. You did that by putting any part of their armor in the red, however... which includes the tires. A pretty effective (and annoying) tactic in multiplayer was to use nothing but flame dropper. Tires that go through it would immediately go into the red, and that would open them up to head shots.
I only tried the multiplayer the once, but I found it to be pretty unbalanced and full of cheats. Or maybe I just sucked.
But basically this game rocked for the single player.
I played this for hours and hours when i was young. And it ROCKED HARD! That's why I want it again! :)
Because it is commonly considered the best "Auto Wars" game ever done.
Because OH MY GOD THE CHILDREN ARE BURNING.
Seriously, I'm probably going to buy this at the weekend JUST so I can try and extract that one bit of audio to use as my alarm clock noise on my phone...
