I'll try and keep this real short and simple...I have been trying to get this game running with varying amounts of success (and failure!) and here are "just the facts!"-
My System:
Intel Core I5 650 @3.22 gHz 8.0 GB Ram Win7 Home 64 ATI Radeon HD5670
I just got my new system and recently discovered VMWare Virtual machines and had a brilliant idea to try to install i76 on it...in a nutshell a failed experiment but it rejuvinated my desire in the worst way. During my research I discovered GOG and decided my glorious 20's were worth the 6$ so I got the new "updated" version. Without going into to much detail I will tell you that I probably have your entire forum here memorized. I have tried everything suggested and find myself hopelessly frustrated. But I figured maybe my input may lead to some renewed interest by those who haven't been fortunate enough to get this game to work to maybe research a bit more and hopefully lead to a mega/universal fix/patch! In case this has all been covered already I apologize that there may have been that one small corner of forum I missed:
I have tried the "Big 3" of Glide Wrappers (zeckensack, dgvoodoo, and nglide) as well as the one included in the GOG version and the ONLY one that I can get to run is zeckensack. Why, you may ask, am I not rejoicing and reveling in my success? Because after reading all these success stories about beautifully rendered high resolution graphics I can only run in 640x480. I know for a fact that dgvoodoo runs well on my system because I run carnivores 2 (Yes, I like to hunt long extinct beasties!) in beautiful 1650x1080 using dgvoodoo. So although I am thrilled to go back to 1997 again and I will put a lot of time into this game it is a tad bit frustrating. In the beginning of my research I did not always think things totally through which led to some interesting - but in the end false - observations. When I first installed dgvoodoo I had already installed zeckensak...but absent minded me forgot that I did and i never uninstalled it. So at one point (based on something I read here) I deleted the "glide2x.dll" file from the i76 install folder and that was when it first ran under glide for me. After much hairpulling and head smacking I finally realized what I had done (only after looking at all installed programs AFTER deleting all glide related files and only then seeing zeckensak still there) and uninstalled ALL wrappers and started from scratch installing each one and then uninstalling COMPLETELY befor moving on to the next one. Here is what I found (Finally! I'm sure SOMEONE is ready to b***hslap me after all this reading...sorry, I do get windy!) -
The preinstalled wrapper crashes after "Unable to initialize 3d Hardware" message. For the rest of the wrappers (I couldn't do it with the "stock" wrapper cuz by the time I thought of this idea I had already deleted the "stock" glide files...WITHOUT backing them up!) I downloaded the catalyst packages 8.5, 9.1, and 9.5 and expanded the atiumdag.dll file from each one. I also used the 10.12 (my current driver) file just for giggles. with the current file I got the "Unable..." message then the crash, although with nglide I saw the old 3dfx splash screen (It almost brought tears to my eyes after all these years!) first. All other atiumdag.dll files wnet to straight crash on dgvoodoo and nglide. Zeckensack all worked fine (Minus ability to go over 640x480) except 10.12. The other thing I noticed (Ibelieve this was covered somewhere here?) was that zeckensack "seems" to have controlled the speed issue when installed by itself. When I went through my "DUH" period and had it installed in tandem with dgvoodoo the speed issue was not corrected.
So there you have it, 30 minutes of reading what could've been explained in 30 seconds. Hopefully this wiil renew research amongst people who have brighter bits in their memory than I do.
Wow...just went back and read everything I guess it wasn't TOO bad!
One final note: I saw some old outdated websites explaining how to get original I76 Gold Edition running on modern (at the time) XP systems and tried that, the results were ALL exactly the same. Guess that 6$ isn't that well spent...although the patches are all 16 bit so none of them can be installed on Win64.
Oh well - we live, we learn!
