Does the game run smoothly on modern systems and is completely playable without extra tweaking? Since searching through the reviews show that the GOG version of this game isn't fantastic.

Also, how long does it take to "beat" the game?

I need to lock my GPU at 30-35 FPS to fix all those severe gameplay problems you have surely heard of. It is very easily done on nvidia cards using a free third party program called "nvidia inspector".

So if I lock the fps at around 30, the game will be fine? No severe bugs or problems?
I have had a similar experience with the game.

Using the stock Nvidia drivers, I use "adaptive v-sync" that locks to half of my monitor's refresh rate (~60hz / 2 = about 30 fps). This solves most, if not all, issues for me.

It will not perfectly replicate the experience of playing it on a time period appropriate computer, there are still some potential physics based problems most noticable in some of the jumps you have to do in the story. Also, I'm quite sure the clouds are moving too fast.

I have not finished the game this way, but I think it is very playable. I guess that if there is some truly game breaking physics bug later in the game it is probably possible to get past it by lowering the frame rate even further temporarily.

Brilliant! I did not know this option existed in the nvidia control panel. Upvoted.

Sounds good to me then! I think I might buy it. :)
Does the Nvidia Inspector solution work if you're using NGlide for the 3DFX version? I don't mind having to play the software version, but it'd be nice to know.

Pretty sure it does, it's still using the video driver at the system level so since you're setting it at the driver level it should carry across as long as it's some sort of 3D acceleration being used.
