Hello,

I just purchased and installed Inquisitor. As soon as i try to run the game, i am met with a flash of a black screen then back at the desktop. The game will not run, i have tried updating my video drivers, i have installed all updates on my machine and i have reinstalled DirectX. Please let me know if there is anything else i can try.

Maybe you don't have necessary WMV codecs required to play the videos. Try to install some codec pack, like
Windows Essentials Codec Pack - http://www.mediacodec.org/
K-Lite Codec Pack - http://codecguide.com/download_kl.htm
or pretty much any codec pack you prefer.

But it could also relate to the refresh rate of your display. Try to go to "C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Inquisitor\GameData", open "d3dparams.ini" and change
MaxRefreshRate=100
to something lower (the best value would probably be the value you use in Windows).

I have a similar problem. Have Windows 7 64 Bit, and it won't start. I tried changing the MaxRefreshRate but it would not let me save the file (I don't have permission). I tried running it as administrator and in XP compatability mode. Nothing.

Do you have Inquisitor installed in the Program Files folder? If so, you could try to reinstall it to some other location - that may allow you to edit the .ini file. I can see no other reason why Windows wouldn't allow you to edit a file that has nothing to do with the system.

Try this:

Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Inquisitor\GameData, or wherever you installed to, find d3dparams.ini file, open with notepad or similar program. Try editing these values to see if you can find a combination that allows the game to start. I say this because, in game I accidentally set the screen resolution to one my monitor didn't support, but once I edited the d3dparams.ini file out of game, the game started right up.

StartWindowed=0
InitialScreenWidth=1024
InitialScreenHeight=768
MaxRefreshRate=100

I got it working! All I needed to do was lower my monitor's resolution. Ranpu should try this as well if he/she hasn't already. I've never had to do this for any other game, so it was the last thing I tried. Works like a charm now. Thanks for all of the suggestions in any case.

I know it has been a LONG time since anyone has left a comment on this, but since I had the same trouble and solved it, so I will post this here in case others run into this.
It is the screen resolution that is causing the trouble. You will have to set your computer's monitor resolution to one of the accepted game setting resolutions.
Although my resolution was already set to 1768 x 992 (which is an acceptable resolution), the d3dparams.ini file by default had the line "MaxRefreshRate=100", which would not work. I changed it to "MaxRefreshRate=30" and the game ran perfect. This is how "my" ini file now reads (as an example ONLY):
InitialScreenWidth=1768
InitialScreenHeight=992
MaxRefreshRate=30

DON'T download/install the "Windows Essentials Codec Pack". As of this posting, it is bundled with several of what I refer to as "legal malware" programs, that unless you "Decline" every one of them, window after window (around six, or more!), your PC will be working for "them" for now on! (this should be illegal!)
If you need it, the K-Lite Codec Pack is great! The "MEGA" has some decent codecs and filters for those who are into that sort of thing (like ME :).

I believe that the available resolution and frequency settings depend on your display/videocard and that the game detects them automatically. The problem is just the default .ini file, namely the MaxRefreshRate value that is too high in some cases.

And yes, it seems that it really is better to use K-Lite Codec Pack instead of the Windows Essentials one.

I fixed the problem mainly by installing game from offline installer without GOG Galaxy, which I think prevented some changes to take effect after edition of config file. Setting the game to window mode with compatibility with win 7 did the rest. Now, while I have display resolution set to 1980x1020, the game works on 1900x1000 to fit into that screen. Not perfect solution but it works.
