So I spent two or three hours investigating the various crimes and rumours in the first Town (Hillbrandt or somesuch?), and I was eventually told by a man called "Stranger" that he intended to kill me. He killed me alright. So far, so usual.

I reloaded and ran away to have a guard help me out. The Stranger and the Guard began beating the hell out of each other, and never stopped. Little red numbers kept flying out of their heads, occasionally interspersed with slightly larger green numbers. I joined the fight and kept hitting the Stranger in the back until my weapon broke. Then I went to a smith (while those two were still exchanging blows), had it repaired, went back and fought on until it broke again.

The Guard and the Stranger are STILL fighting as I type this, with neither getting closer to death.

So, eh...WTF? Can someone explain this to me? Are these characters meant to be invincible, is it a bug, is this a fringe case of the combat system, or is the game just that bad?

I'd like an answer on this one as well.

I was streaming this when it happened and we all expected the typical Baldur's Gate 'oh there you are!' tutorial encounter then the guy wiped the floor with me outright. Thought maybe I'd made a really crappy character and started over only to have it play out just the same.

Love the theme of the game but crap like this is a major turnoff and I haven't been back since the week it came out.
All of a rather sudden, the Stranger broke off his attack to run away some. The guard eventually caught up with him and killed him.

All in all, it took over ten minutes. If this is the way combat is meant to be in Inquisitor, then god help me...I won't have the patience for it.

Likely to be a bug and fringe case of the combat system. In my case, the battle ended within less than a minute with myself and Diabolus killing him. The Stranger will heal only once, and most human enemies will use potion and heal about two or three times, after that they will break combat and run away and be killed. It does happen occasionally that you will encounter storyline plot enemies who have endless full heal because they are meant to surrender, say some last words before they are killed by you or require you to do something after you find out that they are invincible. If you cannot seem to kill an enemy because they seem to heal more than 3 times or so, try loading game and stick to melee with your companions. (There are exceptions on certain boss enemies where they are meant to be invincible until you do something) Some spells that do gradual damage such as locust swarm tend to cause this bug to happen. Try to recruit Diabolus as your first companion to help you with the fights as it is relatively easier to manage combat with companions fighting with you rather than going solo.
