How is the novel related to the game? Does it contain any spoiler as to the game plot? A little late to ask, because I have almost finished it (and it's pretty good!), but I would like to know anyway.

The game has been developed by amateurs and (despite being an overall awesome game) you could feel it while playing. I wouldnt expect much from "a novel" by the same guys. I would definitely go with the game first .)

I think that since the novel isn't related to the game's storyline in any way, you can read it whenever you want. And if you read it beforehand, it could help you in getting in the right mood.
