I just picked it up during the 5 game 80% off sale today, and I have to say it is a blast so far. I haven't even solved any cases yet :) I just like the atmosphere and the world they have built. The villains do seem somewhat obvious after you've done enough poking around, but come on, if they weren't, it would not be as fun. Seriously, it has been proven that people enjoy movies slightly more when they already know how they're going to end ;) Don't ask me to source that!

Really, though, so far this is my ideal dark Gothic fantasy setting and it deals with religion so very directly and realistically compared to most games out there. Sure, magic is real and so are demons, but this is what people really believed back then anyway, so honestly I don't think it makes the story feel less authentic. If anything the fantastic elements just make it better from an entertainment standpoint.

Update: not so great any more. The bugs are really getting to me. The game crashes, the sound cuts out, the UI is a mess and doesn't let you have enough shortcuts, you can't equip your followers, etc... I could go on, but I'm starting to feel like I've wasted enough time on this game when I could be playing something else.

If this game ever gets a fan patch addressing the things I talked about it could be great, but as it is, the game is a buggy and barely playable waste of money and time. I wouldn't mind reading a plot synopsis though since that seems to be the main thing this game has going for it.

This is exactly how I feel. I booted the game up, and was immediately amazed. I could tell by the title screen that this game was going to be amazing. Chose my class and made my character, and I about lost it during the video. The game looked so awesome! Once I got in-game, I had to pause and watch the trees swaying... It was so fantastic, and I was incredibly happy with my purchase.

And then I found that the UI doesn't scale to the resolution. And that the game crashes on boot sometimes. And the awful quest log. And the Holy Walls of Text. But that wouldn't bother me so much, the story and art blew me away.

And then I got to the combat sequences. I suffered for a few hours, trying to beat some of the monsters, and maybe I did use console commands to give myself a few extra levels... But once I got down into the first dungeon, on easy, and I was several levels higher than the monsters, and I had two companions and I was STILL dying? Well, that was it for me.

I hope that I can play this game again, one day. It looks incredibly interesting, and the story sounds fantastic. Maybe someone can steer me onto the correct way to play this game.

You aren't doing it wrong. I just made another huge book post about how bad this game is after attempting to take a level 70 Paladin to the end of Act 1. It is just a boring slog of unoriginal combat in cliche environments with horrible systems even by "old" game standards.

And were you able to do it?? I'm scouring the forums, and apparently, melee combat is broken. I suppose if Jesus can't beat this dang game... :)

Here is the thing, even if you make yourself level 70 to skip grinding forever, it doesn't matter. You still can only kill one enemy at a time and fight groups pretty much constantly. You attack slowly, and even with a 2H flail that had +100% damage as a property, on easy mode, I had to use potions to survive group fights where I just couldn't kill the enemies fast enough. This is with 70 levels worth of armor and weapon skill, hp, and everything else. I gave myself 100000 gold as well just to try to make the worst part of the game (the combat) go as painlessly as possible and scummed the NPCs to buy a set of blue equipment, and it didn't matter. All it did was ensure I would not run out of potions. The combat isn't hard, it is just terrible and pointless, and you can't really make it any less terrible and pointless no matter what you do.
