I haven't seen this mentioned; my apologies if it's already been addressed somewhere.

I just left the iron mines and went back to Hillbrandt. Immediately after my party and I arrived, soldiers and townsfolk immediately started attacking us. Suddenly, they stood down. Then they started attacking again.

I tried loading a savegame that put us back in the iron mines, and entered Hillbrandt again. The same thing occurred.

Is this supposed to happen?

Nope, it's not. Congrats for finding this bug though! Can you at least talk with the named NPCs ?

Thanks, charbon!

Concerning named NPCs, I must admit that I didn't try to talk to any of them. The size of the mob that attacked us made it difficult to identify individuals or do anything except fight back.

In one instance of this mob violence, a solitary soldier who'd been attacking broke free and took off. I followed him. He stopped when he got to the group of other soldiers who are lined up in the southeast part of town between the jail and the town's barrier wall. As I approached, everything was fine...for a few seconds. Then it was back to being attacked. This actually got sort of funny.

When I ended my session last night, I left my party parked at Hillbrandt's Place of Execution. Tonight, I went from there to the iron mines, then back to Hillbrandt as I had done last night. No one attacked. I tried going other places and returning to Hillbrandt. No one attacked.

So I don't know...I guess something went out of whack temporarily or something. I'm curious to see if it will happen again at some point.

But now, I'm having another problem in Hillbrandt. I took my party to the inn and clicked on Truthorn to talk to him. This caused my character to step behind the bar, go in circles for a few seconds and get stuck there. No matter what I try, I can't get him to budge.

Any suggestions, aside from loading a savegame and losing progress? Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom.
Do you have a magical box? If so, destroy one and let the genie talk to you and choose "take me home" option, should teleport you back in the beginning of Hillbrandt.

If you don't have one, search the forum for the command in the console to add magical box. Probably other ways via console too.
Thanks for the suggestion, Nirth. As it turns out, I actually did have a magical box. And I did as you said: I destroyed it, talked to the genie and chose "take me home."

Unfortuately, I wasn't taken anywhere. I'm still stuck behind the bar!

Everything was going fairly well in this game until last night -- I don't know what caused things to start going wrong. I suppose my only option to get free could turn out to be the savegame route.

I'm staying put for now, though, so if there are other suggestions...I'm willing to try just about anything at this point. Thanks again.
This never happened to me so, aside from reloading a previous save, I don't know. If you try to reload the autosave-level you shouldn't lose much progress, I think, as you will be taken back to the point right before you returned to Hillbrandt.
This actually happens for me time to time, my character getting stuck and my AIs do it all the time, the pathing in this game isn't the best but I never get stuck for more than a few seconds.
Thanks for trying to help, guys. I guess I'll go the savegame route and hope for the best.
