There's a girl's body there and I can pick it up and store it in my inventory. Question is whether it's necessary or just something taking up space?

In fact I just now went back to the inn of the first town and dumped a bunch of stuff I've been saving up into the chest there on the second floor. I have a ton of scrolls that I can't scribe yet and specialty potions I'll probably never use yet can't seem to sell. Suffice to say I actually have space now! :P

Nope, it won't. I even put them for a long while in the tree stumps until I managed to successfully pick and disarm the chest in the inn :)
