I have enough skill points as to investigate a little bit the alchemy skill.
However, it lacks descriptions and I am not sure of my conclusions.
=> please confirm/infirm/comment on the points below.

1° apprentice level useless ?

It seems that the 8 basic potions (healing, stamina, mana, speed, ...) cannot be brewed by the priest and therefore the alchemy is useless at the apprentice level.

2° disciple and journeyman levels useless ?

These levels allow the priest to brew potion made of respectively 2 and 3 basic potions. But the cost in skill points is such and the money so easy to make that it is more effective to use the skill points elsewhere and just loot/buy the potions from the sellers (not mentioning that personally I have never used them).

3° master level: with heavy restrictions ?

At master level, I am able to brew PERMANENT potions, i.e. the same potions that the healers can brew from devil roots, increasing the corresponding attribute of permanently 1 point.

I was thinking that this would justify the heavy investment which was otherwise useless below the master level.
But I can only brew permanent potions from the miraculous basic potions (as opposed to bad, acceptable, ... types).
This is a heavy restriction because miraculous basic potions are really rare. For instance, I kept all the potions I have looted since the beginning of the game and I only have enough as to brew ... one (1) single permanent potion!

4° master level 17, 18, 19, and 20 bring nothing ?

I was hoping that the restriction of point 3 would be lifted for these levels, but it is not the case.
I made a trial at level 20 with 4 perfect basic potions and I can only brew three elements.

Conclusions (if above is correct):
- alchemy skill is pretty useless => rather invest in wisdom and your favorite magic fields(s)
- to raise an attribute above the max. level allowed, first reach the max. allowed and only after use the permanent potions brewed from devil roots (this is still allowed as opposed to use attribute points)
- you can easily raise all the attribute levels by ca. 30 points with super-rings, amulet, and belt => another killer for this skill

I think you got it pretty right. As far as my priest and his Alchemy skill go, I started to use it only after I reached the Master level and was able to brew elixirs. The trick to get the miraculous potions you need to brew an elixir you want, is to open a merchant's inventory over and over again until those potions appear there. You will have to click a lot for that but I decided to spend some time doing that and was able to boost my Speed and Intelligence considerably. In the end, I was quite content with this skill.

As far as Devil's Roots go, their downside is that the elixirs brewed by wisewomen are random and to get the one you want you will have to reload and repeat the appropriate dialogue again.

I'm also looking into some rules I have at my disposal and I can see that the Apprentice, Disciple and Journeyman levels of the Alchemy skill also add some other bonuses (Apprentices can drink Health, Stamina and Mana potions a bit faster, the Disciple level "decreases the difficulty of potions consumed" (whatever that means), and the Journeyman level prolongs the effect duration of potions).
Thank you for these details, Kovi.
I have now finished the game and indeed with plenty of devil roots, magical boxes and money that I didn't use. Optimizing the skills and attributes was a good wish but really not mandatory to finish the game in normal difficulty.
