I loved this game growing up on the PS2, and didn't even know there was a PC version of it out there. I was absolutely delighted when I saw it on GOG, and purchased it immediately. However, customising the controls for PC has turnied out to be awkward. The best solution I have at the moment (after two sessions with the game) is as follows:

Forward: W
Back: S
Left: A
Right: D

Rope Climb: T (very clunky, but the easiest solution I could find)
Rope Descend: G (ditto)

Primary Attack: Mouse 0
Secondary Attack: Mouse 1

Jump: Space
Action: E
Draw/Pack: Q
Reload: R
Somersault: L Ctrl

Inventory Open: -- (can use Inv. Next to open)
Inv. Prev: -- (best solution I have is using Inv. Next for all inventory scrolling)
Inv. Next: Tab
Inv. Close: L Alt (Again, not a vital function, as the inventory closes itself after a selection, or on timeout)

Guard Mode: L Shift
1st Person: F (Not the handiest, but it works)
Wall Hug Peek Left: Z (default)
" " Peek Right: X (default)
Walk: V (fairly clunky)

If anyone has a better solution to control mapping for this game, I'd love to hear it, as I absolutely adore the game and would love a simpler control map for the PC. (I don't have an XBox controller at the moment, but would consider getting one just for this game, if it'd make the playthrough more natural).

Any better control layout suggestions?

Turns out you can use the scroll wheel to cycle through items and click it to select.

You can also you the number keys (not the number pad) to select items, but it's clunky and some things you need to be holding nothing (1 key) to equip.

I only just saw your response now. That sounds incredibly handy, and I'll have to try that next time I play the game. Thanks so much for your input. I really appreciate the response.
I've just started playing this game but I quickly came to the conclusion that it might be best to avoid using the mouse altogether.

Consequently, I'm experimenting with the following configuration:
Forward: W
Back: S
Left: A
Right: D

Rope Climb: Up
Rope Descend: Down

Primary Attack: Left
Secondary Attack: Right

Jump: Space
Action: Right Shift
Draw/Pack: Q
Reload: R
Somersault: Left Control

Inventory Open: -- (unnecessary due to Inv. Next function)
Inv. Prev: --
Inv. Next: E
Inv. Close: -- (unnecessary as both Primary Attack key and Draw/Pack automatically close the inventory - though when selecting a weapon use of the former will obviously make Indy fire it)

Guard Mode: L Shift
1st Person: Right Control (handy for resetting the camera - especially during fights - in fact it's the only form of camera control I'm currently using)
Wall Hug Peek Left: Z
Wall Hug Peek Right: X
Walk: Left Alt (haven't used this one yet)

Hey everyone. I know this is sort of an old topic, but does anyone know if we can play this using an Xbox One controller? We have had little luck. What about an Xbox 360 controller? Hopefully, and I'm living on a prayer here, someone will see this before long. Thanks in advance.

EDIT:

Never mind! We figured it out. Happy treasure hunting!
