I suggest to try dgVoodoo2, a glide and DX wrapper.
Copy the included MS files into the resource folder of the game, as well as the control panel .exe. Start that an chosse settings of your liking.

Tried it, it doesn't work same issue persists. I used to get the game to run on dgVoodoo back when I was installing the game off of its CD and it worked fine. What I don't understand is the intermittent nature of the game working. Although i have not been able to get the game to work the past few days even using identical setups to when it would work.
Have you tried a 5:4 or 4:3 resolution?
I don't believe the resolution is the problem as the game does not recognize resolution changes till you are in the game. Like I said it was randomly working now it won't operate at all.
Having the same problem?! Is there a fix or not?
Have this game on Steam as well. I had the same problem on steam and found that setting the resolution to 800x600 and then launching would launch the game. You then could increase the resolution in the display options in game.

I had the same crash upon startup here on the GOG version. Seeing some of the other users noting issues with headsets? I unplugged the USB wireless dongle and the game launched!

Thanks for the help guys.

For me unfortunately it only works intermitently. I am pretty positive the issue is the soundcard, but I am not removing it for just one game especially considdering the game can go months working fine.
So this issue keeps persisting and it's random for me. Game has been working fine for weeks. I started having an odd issue with my soundcard (Sound BlasterX AE-5), so reinstalled the exact same drivers the game was working under. Now it is back to crashing at startup. I just tried the trick of installing it to the Programs (x86) folder and that did not work. This is an incredibly frustrating issue.
Okay i think i have totally narrowed this down and fixed it. This game is super sensitive to audio settings. bassicouly you can only have one audio output and input device enabled. you must disable all other devices. That seems to fix it.
Well all of that was working for several weeks and then suddenly today game won't launch again. i am honestly so tired of this.
You should run the games diagnostic first, and see what the issues are. If it says you don't have any, then your system is just weird in some way that this game will not run correctly.

If you're on a Win10 system, then the game should run automatically without tweaking it whatsoever. If you're using cmopatability modes or Administrator Access, then you're telling your system that this software has special priorities and settings at whatever you set your Admin Acess at. And if you tweak the game or system, then it won't run because you've altered your computer, which means you would need to reinstall it again.

Lucasarts games did have a quirk with the sound settings that effected some games, but that was over twenty years ago, and a recoding for Win10 should not reproduce that.

Personally, I wouldn't invest that much time in getting this game to run. Personally, I like it a lot because it's casual adventure game with a popular movie icon, but I wouldn't spend weeks or months trying to get it fired up.

Best of luck.
Hi there,

I also had the issue, that I can't run Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine.

What did I try?
- Under Windows 10 x64 (Build 1809; physical machine) with Corsair headset I tried all settings in combination from the Windows compatibility mode, but nothing worked for me.
- Under Windows 10 x32 (Build 1903; physical machine) it didn't work with Corsair headset.
- Tried the game on Windows 10 x32 (Build 1903; physical machine) Windows 7 SP1 x32 (Virtual machine) and Windows 10 x64 (Build 1903; virtual machine), all without Corsair headset, which works always fine.
- Tried different game resolutions (Full HD and lower).
- Oracle VirtualBox 5.2.32 (Freeware) and VMware Workstation Pro 12 for virtualization. Both with active 3D acceleration.

How to fix?
- Under Windows 10 x32 (Build 1903; physical machine) I removed my Corsair USB stick for my wireless headset VOID Pro RGB.
- Under Windows 10 x64 (Build 1809; physical machine) I removed my Corsair USB stick for my wireless headset VOID Pro RGB.
PLUS, you must add 2 exceptions for the "Data Execution Prevention" (DEP). For "Indy3D.exe" and "Jones3d.exe".
- Make sure that you everytime, before you want to play, set the game resolution to "1024 x 768" pixels. With higher resolutions you wil be not able to start the game. Once the game has load, press the "Esc" key and change it to a resolution of your desire.

Why the exception in DEP?
After you've try to run the game, which ends in a crash, an event is written. You'll find those events in the "Event Viewer" in the Control Panel. Once opened, click on the left side on category "Application". Go through those events of "Error" level. The game causes the exception code "0xc0000005". This error code points on a possible DEP incompatibility.

Conclusion
This game is incompatible with the Corsair wireless headset and additionally under 64-bit environments also with DEP. Virtual machines don't cause any issue, doesn't matter if it is x64 or 32x architecture. Furthermore it struggles at start with game resolutions > 1024 x 768 pixels.
After the game has start, you can plug in your Corsair headset again and listen to Indy.
If my hints can't help you, then please use "VMware Workstation Pro" (or "VMware Workstation Player", which is freeware) to play the game. There I had no issues. In VirtualBox there is no 3D graphic card recognized by the game. So VMware is your first choice.

Note
- My headset's firmware version is 39.02 and I use iCUE version 3.20.80.
- If you don't have a Corsair wireless headset, try to remove your external sound card, in case you have.

I ran into the same issue, so I'll just copy paste what I posted when I fixed it:

I was running into the same issue that some people encountered: Infernal Machine crashed upon launching, showing just a black screen and a busy cursor. I have a geforce 1070 mounted on an asus motherboard running win 10 64 bits.

I tried several of the things people tried before: disabling other audio devices... etc. Nothing worked.

Thanks to Falran from the technical department, I was able to make it run. This is what I did:

-Downloaded the 430.86 nvidia driver
-Installed it
-Tried a modern game to check it worked (it did)
-Downloaded and installed the latest sound device driver.
-Rebooted
-Updated GOG Galaxy and installed the game from there
-Launched the game, just to try.
-It runs!

Nvidia also has hd audio drivers for the hdmi connections, I don't know if this had also something to do, but I tried the game after updating both drivers, so it could be any of the two
Anyway, the game looks gorgeous on HD resolution, and I'm very happy to be able to play it! I hope some of you are able to make it run by doing this.

Again, thanks, Farlan!

jaretecansino: Infernal Machine crashed upon launching, showing just a black screen and a busy cursor.
I had this exact same problem, after several days of the game running normally. It was fixed in a rather simple way, so I'll share in case it is useful for anyone.

I just access Window's Control Panel, the Sound section, and I clicked "Solve problems" for the sound output device (which in my case it's just my laptop speakers). It actually found a problem, asked to restart Windows, and after that the game worked fine again.
Ok, i finally managed to make the game work. I am playing on a Win10 notebook, and I dont have any headset or anything pluged in USB. Any of the previous instructions didnt worked for me.
So here are steps, that worked for me:
- first i turned off DEP (Data Execution Prevention) for Jones3d.exe and Indy3d.exe
- second I downloaded and replaced original ddraw.dll with DDrawCompat from this github https://github.com/narzoul/DDrawCompat/releases
- also i installed dgVoodoo, but i don think this could have some effect on it, because with dgVoodoo and original ddraw.dll it doesnt work.
After replacing the ddraw.dll the game started. But after intro video the screen was all white with some contours. The game finally runs :D
- To load the first level I used save games from this site https://savesforgames.com/game-saves/save-for-indiana-jones-and-the-infernal-machine/
New game has still some issues, but whe I resume the game from save, there is no problem and game runs perfect. Even Level transitions arent issue.
Hope it will help someone.
