I'v played most if not all of the space combat/trade sims out there, dating back to 'Elite' on the Amiga. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but I wanted to give this game a go.. It at first reminded me of Freelancer but i found the control mechanism to be unplayable beyond reason..
FL had a good control technique, as did Frontier Elite 2 along with the 'X' series, X2 the threat for example.
I only managed to get about half way through, the story was engaging and decent, most of the time it was the only thing that kept me playing, despite the frustrating mission difficulty.
An ambitious title that falls way short of the mark, but for any hardcore space sim fan out there, it wouldn't hurt for a few dollars.
I'd reccomend checking out Elite and Elite 2, along with Freelancer and some of the X series, as they are great games, worthy to be on GOG no doubt. Also (cheesy name but) Space Rangers 2 Rise of The Dominators is a great game.. I'd put them before this title for sure
You could try using a PS2 controller via USB connector (or perhaps even a PS3 controller)

I find that the dual-analog sticks and plethora of buttons works quite well with this game.
Which I-War: the original or the sequel?

For what it's worth, Freelancer bored the daylights out of me. Maybe I'll load it up again to try to find what I missed the first time, assuming I can find the box with the disks.

There is one thing that I really wanted from I-War 2, and that's a true trading element mixed in with the storyline. Instead, it's more a matter of foraging until you come up with the particular trade item you need in order to get the ship weapon or component that you want. A hybrid between I-War 2's system and the Privateer-style system where you're actually trading things to try to get ahead monetarily would have suited nicely: leave the money out of it but allow you to trade one commodity for another in order to satisfy your trade requirements for ship components. While the game allows for open discovery, it just didn't provide much actual reason to get out there and poke around on your own.

Thanks for the suggestions on the other games - I guess I need to read some reviews and try to find these other classics.
The Torn Stars mod for I-War 2 might be what you're looking for.
Thinking about it. What I was hoping for is a true trade element wrapped within the original storyline. From my understanding TS is more of a sandbox mod but no story - is that correct?
you know there is a Future trading mod, which allows for full trading and economies within the original iwar2 storyline, right? just go to www.i-war2.com and download it there (you will need the uni-gui mod and multimod as well, and while you are at it, pick up custom jafs and colossus for him, to make pod retrieval super easy)
Most "hard core" space sim fans are turned off by this series precisely because the ships fly more like a sim and not arcade like WC, freespace, freelancer, etc. Learning to fly a corvette or patcom, or tug with real inertia and simulated physics is alot different from turn on a dime atmospheric style flying in most other space combat games, even X-XTC's pseudo nuetonian models (and really poor excuse for a combat model).

I had much frustration with the Iwar games at first and died more than I played it seemed, but after a while I got the hang of it and was able to have more fun than I've had in a long time in a space sim. You just have to realize it's more of a cap-ship simulator than a fighter arcade. Starting a fight without an advantageous position is usually suicide. Missiles are your friend. Never fight in an LDSi field if you can help it and use the manual LDS toggle trick to cancel momentum. If you find yourself in a hotspot try to build speed quickly and get out of there while using your strafe jets. String the bad guys out and take them one at a time if you can. Use power management all the time(fly by your opponenet, full power to engines to turn quickly, LDS toggle to cancel inertia quickly, then full power to weapons when you're on their unshielded six and let em have it.)

Dogfighting in IWar is much more about strategy and tactics than twitch reflexes.

Also it gets much easier when you get turret and remote fighters along with much much better tech later on. I completely agree about the lack of trading, it's mostly a pirating game but there are some mods (future trader) that help. But as far as space pirating I-war 2 is my favorite. I still love getting that Maas Superfrieghter score or just sitting in the void near an L-point waiting for a distress signal so I can vulture some fat loot.

I assume you meant I-War 2. The original is even more unforgiving (especially the non-check-pointed Commonwealth missions, as opposed to Defiance).

No matter how much i love those games i simply can not agree that they had good control technique's, Not for spaceflight at least.

I-War let's you fly a spacecraft while the other games let's you fly a airplane in space.

Okay, we get it: you get destroyed quickly in the first mission. No need to dredge up every semi-relevant thread to say the same thing over and over again. I would instead suggest reading the piracy thread - and a few others - to get some helpful combat tips.

Well I for one agree wholeheartedly with Smasha.

It is just the insane unfair difficulty and ludicrous mission designs that let IW1 and IW2 down. The "realisms" I am fine with - the unfairness I'm not.

Unlike IW1 which has a superb set of cheats, IW2 doesn't even give you any decent cheat options at all!
So be it. Play something else.
