If you want to run the game in a higher resolution, but the default glide wrapper (zeckensack) and the dgVoodoo glide wrapper don't work correctly, then you can try the nGlide wrapper.
(Skip to "The Solution" if you only want to know how to set up the nGlide wrapper ;) )
THE PROBLEM:
So I recently bought Independence War: Deluxe Edition and there was one "issue": It ran in 640x480, in a small box with black borders.
So I tried to configure the default glide wrapper ini, setting "high_res" to 1, inserting "res_limit x" etc. ... Nothing changed, still 640x480.
Then I gave dgVoodoo a try. I set it up, as it is described in this thread and... hooray! It ran in 1600x900 (my native resolution)! But another problem appeared: the text on the ship-displays disappeared! Well apparently, I cheered too soon. :-P
THE SOLUTION:
Next thing I tried was the nGlide wrapper:

Only thing you have to do is to download and install it. And be sure to delete (or rename) glide2x.dll and glide3x.dll in the game directory (I'm no expert in this, but I think otherwise there would be a conflict with the default wrapper (zeckensack's wrapper. Please correct me if I'm wrong). Go to the Windows Start Menu and start the nGlide configurator. Here you can set your desired resolution.
And this time I had a reason to cheer: Now it runs in 1600x900 PLUS the text is there where it belongs ;)
I hope this helps the people, who also had issues getting the right resolution (or had other graphical issues) with the default and dgVoodoo wrapper.
P.S.:
I just started to play the game, so I cannot tell if the nGlide wrapper is or is not stable. If someone can confirm, that it is indeed stable throughout the game, I will write it in this post. But like I said before, I'm absolutely no expert in this, so if someone encounters issues, I hope you'll be able to discuss a solution in this thread.
EDIT (01.09.2011):
It seems that the nGlide wrapper works very well for I-War and there are no problems!
Thanks Buatha, cooperblack, Ravenger for the confirmations! :)
