Hi all

So I'm having a bit of a strange problem...

The game runs really well, except for one problem - some of the sounds are not working.

Music is fine.
Speech is fine.
Interface sounds are fine.

But no ship noises.
No weapon firing noises.
No explosion noises.

I didn't even notice the problem until part way through the tutorial, as it's just some of the noises that are missing.
Does anyone know what could cause this or how to fix it?

Thanks!

I can't help you with the weapon sounds, but regarding the sound of your own tug, you can d/l the "Original Tug w/fixes" mod from http://i-war2.com/downloads.htm . It adds positioning thrusters sounds to your tug, which makes movement in space even more believable.

If you still can't hear the thrusters, something else seems to be broken.
How strange!

So no-one else is having this problem?

I'm running a fresh install under Windows XP.

Have run the game before in the past and it worked fine (not the gog version).

And every other game works perfectly too.

I wonder what could cause just certain sounds not to work?

Right now I'm thinking it could be something like a positional audio problem.

Does anyone know what positional audio system this game uses? OpenAL, etc.?
What sound card do you use?

If you have a surround setup maybe you should try to change the Windows soundconfig to stereo speakers to see if you can hear all sounds that way.
The game uses directsound, so should work on XP with no issues. You haven't installed any codec packs have you? They can interfere with the sound, but it's normally the speech or music that's affected.

As Strijkbout says, try setting your sound card to desktop stereo speakers to see if that fixes the problem.
On a similar note:
Sometimes, after a few minutes of flying, an engine sound gets stuck.
I will hear a certain engine, often one of a freighter or sometimes my own ships engine at full burn, in one particular direction despite being alone with my engines off.
It's not game-breaking of course but it kind of kill the mood.
Anybody having similar problems and perhaps a solution?
