How can I tell which weapons are better when equipping/un-equipping them? There are no descriptions in the interface as far as I can tell.

The in-game encyclopedia describes the weapons, ships, shields, and a bunch of other stuff.

I think the automatic loadouts (Assault, Standard, etc.) will pick the components with the highest stats for you. So if you want to customize, pick a template, then customize it, and you'll be starting with the more or less better components.
