I have trouble starting the game on my Vista x64 setup. So far I've reinstalled, attempted compatibility mode, admin, running all three of the possible .exe files that can start it, shortcut etc
All I get is this black screen (see attachment.)
I checked the flux.txt log, and it seems to fail on this particular line:
"FLUX: [unknown] LINKER: The package "ifrontendgui" is dependent on package "igame", which failed to load or link"

If you installed this game to program files on vista you may have permission issues when it installed. If you did try uninstalling it and either reinstall it to a folder outside program files like C:\Games or right click and run the installer as an administrator.
The installer automatically requests elevation so I'm not sure how that can be the problem.
Just bought it and got the same problem on Windows 7x64. Tried recommened setup, but it did not work. :(
What is sad, that original worked fine, I bought GOG's version, so I would not have to insert CD and it was a fail.

Screen: http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/6518/eocd.jpg

Well one problem solved, one appeared afterwards. :P
Solution: add loader.exe to DEP exceptions or disable DEP.
Next problem: game asks to insert play disc CD. Thats is cruel.

I've re-installed the game and managed to repeat the bug. I think I've found a way around it.

Firstly make sure the game's loader.exe and EdgeOfChaos.exe are set to Windows 2000 compatibility.

Also open up the flux.ini file search for FcResourceManager and check that it's setup like this:

[FcResourceManager]
search_paths[0] = .\resource
search_paths[1] = .\streams
search_paths[2] = .\Movies
search_cd = 0
generate_access_log = 0

That fixed it for me.

Thanks for the tip, but it did not work for me. I tried various combinations with your setup for an hour with no luck.
It looks, that I will just have to keep iso of my play disc after all. RIP "great" nocd crack ingame.dll. :P

I still have a developer version of the game, and it did the same with the dev version too, so I think it's more than just a problem with the no cd check.
Thanks, DEP turned out to be the problem. That thing is the bane of my existance. I'm sorry about the CD check problem, you could start a thread of your own. Also, depending on what country you live in it may be fair game to apply a crack if it prevents you from playing a legitimately acquired copy.

Damnit, marked the wrong post as solution.

I am glad, that at least you have got it sorted out. Well since GOG's version actually uses nocd crack (ingame.dll), which causes the same problem (cursor only), it will not help to apply it again. ;)
when i initially installed and ran i got the intro and to the screen where you could start new game -- after choosing, the game crashed.

now, after trying all the recommendations, i get nothing BUT the black screen and cursor.

its quite frustrating.
DEP - that's what finally worked for me. After trying the other fixes mentioned in the thread, adding both loader.exe and the EoC launcher, everything started up normally.
DEP fixed it for me too - you guys are legends.
Hmm, I can't get this running in Win 7 x64 no matter what combination of fixes I try. The DEP fix lets me watch the intro movies, but the game freezes up at a screen with a picture of the kid from the movie; there's no menu options. At this point task manager can't kill the program and I have to reset or logoff. Any ideas on what to do next?
Have you tried setting both loader.exe and edgeofchaos.exe to compatibility with Win2000 as well as making them DEP exceptions?

Yes, I've tried both.
