Ok, I thought some of the earlier missions were annoying, I was wrong.
What's the deal with this mission???

I'm shooting at the rear of the mega freighter but it takes so little damage and eventually it starts taking evasive manoeuvres to pull itself rear out of my sights and it's so huge that by the time I reach the rear again, it's repaired all the damage I did.
Is this I-War 1 or 2?
I'm thinking it's I-war 1, since I can't find a mission with that name in any of the walkthroughs. If it's I-war 2, then just shoot the mega freighter anywhere instead of worrying about maneuvering to the rear. Haven't noticed that it makes any significant difference on that vessel in the second game. Better to keep applying pressure than to allow shield recovery and repairs.
This is from a strategy guide I wrote back when I first joined Particle Systems:

Objective 3: Disable LDS field generator
Byrne says the Megatransporter’s shield and LDS drive are being projected from an aft unit. You won’t be able to blow up the Megatransporter until this is destroyed.

Destroying it is tricky. Moving around in the LDS field is difficult, and the transporter will keep on turning to keep its rear away from your guns. Also the Megatransporter has a very powerful PBC turret at the rear. Missiles don’t work properly in the LDS field, so don’t use them.

To destroy the shield and LDS drive, target it (It’s called CABOOSE), fly round to the rear and attack it with rapid fire PBC blasts. When the transporter turns, it normally turns in one direction, keep moving on the inside of the turn to keep the rear in view, shooting at the rear whenever you can. When you destroy the LDS drive the ship will drop out of LDS, and start launching tugs.

Objective 4: Destroy Megatransporter
Try to concentrate on destroying the Megatransporter. Ignore (if you can) the tugs for the time being. If you don’t destroy the Megatransporter quickly you’ll find it difficult to get a clear shot at it as it will keep launching more and more tugs.
Get close enough and you can subtarget one of the pods on the transporter. Shoot this with rapid fire PBC and you’ll destroy the transporter very quickly, otherwise it’s very well shielded and will take a while to destroy.
It's I-War 1, sorry.

Thanks Ravenger!

I guess I was doing it correctly, just can't seem to put the damage on fast enough.
Maybe I should finally use the AM injector...

Try boosting power to your weapons using the TRI, and using manually aimed rapid fire at close range. Remember the closer you are, the more damage you'll do.
This mission was one of the more annoying missions. It really is too bad the original campaign wasn't updated with checkpoints like in the defiance campaign when it was rereleased as the deluxe edition.

Boosting power to weapons is useful in taking down the LDS field, but it makes it harder to compensate for the movement of the transporter, of course. I usually use the AM injector at this point too, and have occasionally forgotten to turn it off, which leads to... problems.

I wanted to do that, but it was considered to be to big a task given the schedule and budget constraints the Defiance campaign - it would have required complete re-testing of the entire original game and a new set of master discs to be made.
That part became really easy once I used the correct tactics.
Proper manoeuvring + Max weapon charge + AM injection. ^.^

However, the part after proved to be more tricky. Died a few times without even putting a scratch on the freighter.
Then on the 4th try, the freighter decided to explode after 2 shots. *shrug*
I find this mission incredibly difficult/frustrating - mostly because:

- The Megatransporter seems to take damage so randomly. I still haven't figured out what's the 'sweet spot' to shoot at (other than the 'rear' of the vessel).
- If I get close to the transporter's rear, I weirdly get sucked in and collide with it. I don't know if it's part of the real physics or just a bug...
- Once the LDS field is destroyed, it doesn't make much sense that the remote missiles are totally powerless and yet you can destroy the transporter with a PBC.

Also, I found out about the 'AM Injector' by reading this forum thread. I wonder why it is not mentioned in the game's manual? Was it added later?

Ok, just needed to vent this out... It's a really nice game, but on a bad day like this I wish it could be more refined and balanced.
