For those of you for whom the game loads but the mouse won't work I have a solution.

X-Box for PC controller. Left stick works joystick, A fire, B alternate fire, thumb pad works up and down for 'copters and forward and backwards for alien craft.

The joystick (particularly with an inverted Y axis) isn't ideal but I have been able to fight my way through the first ten missions.
