Hi, all. Just got Imperialism 1 this week and delighted to be renunited with the game after 15 years - thanks to GoG it runs smoothly on my Vista 64.

I have a plan to use the Imperialism map as the basis for a miniatures wargaming campaign, a world war between mythical countries ca. 1900. It's going to be a lot easier then designing a map from scratch in Hexographer and it has a lot of attractive points such as lots of room for seaborne invasions and naval battles. I thought I'd play it out in Imperialism up to the point where the infastructures of the powers are reasonably well developed and just enough conquest and colonization has taken place that some Minors are left in play and Great Powers have taken on more or less provinces. And the course of the gameplay would naturally develop a compelling backstory for my campaign.

The only issue I have is with the place names. For example, Haxaco sounds like a nice Hispanic flavored country but LOL, iis apparenly New Jersey grown to a Great Power. No doubt Chris Christie would be delighted, me not so much. That's on Fixed names setting, the Random countries setting seems more what I need but many of the names are decidedly odd.

Is there any way to edit the map files without requiring mad programming skills ?
