I've got a widescreen monitor and I've got a problem with the screens and the in-game play being "stretched" horizontally. My desk-top resolution is 1366 x 768 and in 1024 x 768, everything is stretched out. I've stretched changing the conf.ini file and the problem persists. The only way I can get things to be "unstretched" is by playing windowed mode and that's pretty distracting.

Is there any way to resolve this? If need be, I'd rather have black bars on the sides of the screen since they're less distracting than the stretching or seeing bits of my desk-top.

c
I have widescreen and no stretching, I have the following in the conf.ini.

[window]
width=1920
height=1080
ColourBits=32
DepthBits=24
StencilBits=8
ChangeScreenRes=1
FullScreen=1
DrawIfNotFocused=0
EnableResize=0
EnableClose=1
SaveAspect=0
Use3Renders=0

If you want 4:3 with the black bars you have to change it within the driversettings of your videocard (keep aspect ratio).
The stretching seems to occur because no matter how I configure the conf.ini file, i.e. even if I change the resolution to 1366 x 768, the game "forces" the resolution to be 1024 x 768. It's almost as if the game isn't even reading the conf.ini file.
I experience the same problem.

Here are my settings:
[window]
width=1920
height=1080
ColourBits=32
DepthBits=24
StencilBits=8
ChangeScreenRes=1
FullScreen=1
DrawIfNotFocused=0
EnableResize=0
EnableClose=1
SaveAspect=0
Use3Renders=0

IL-2 seems to ignore the settings. Tried with and without the Universal update 1.0.1.5 - same result.

So one problem is if you ever go into the display settings section for the game inside IL-2 it resets the conf.ini or something like that. But I don't think that is your problem because you say the conf.ini file is still the right way around. Hmmm ... and you tried it with and without the patch. I'm stumped. Sorry.

EDIT: Is the game location in the Program Files folder? Sometimes administrator access is needed to run games properly from there. Have you tried running the game as administrator - or moving the game to a different folder?

I think they need to change the image scaling in the driver settings, if the screen is set scale image to full panel size it will fill the screen with the complete 4:3 aspect ratio picture with stretching as a result.
If the drivers are set it to maintain aspect ratio it will draw the picture with a bit of the top and bottom missing but without stretching.

This is how it is set on my computer, Nvidia cards will have different but similar settings.

that will give them the pillarboxing, yes? Shouldn't conf.ini by itself give them the widescreen aspect ratio without needing to do that?

It is indeed in Program Files (x86) and running as administrator fixed the problem. Thanks!

Glad it worked!

Good hunting!
Funny thing is that lower resolution with 4:3 shows you more than higher resolution with widescreen. That is because IL-2 DOES stretch 4:3 screen to fit in widescreen aspect. Eventually we get top and bottom cut screen in widescreen aspect.

This can be resolved by setting custom FOV. It is really useful so one with widescreen should try. Follow the link and see the instruction.
