Here's a link to a very helpful article in SimHQ, describing how to update your IL-2: 1946 installation with a more recent version of the DGEN dynamic campaign engine (used by the game by default), more dynamic campaigns, a better quick mission builder, and improved aircraft markings, along with instructions to get the best out of the multiplayer. It was made with the DVD version in mind, but most of it should apply to GOG's version.

There's also another dynamic campaign engine available, made by Lowengrin. I personally think it's better than DGEN, but I know plenty of people who prefer DGEN, so it's really down to personal taste. Here's the link to Lowengrin's website:
