After buying 50+ games from GOG in just 2 months and then getting no support whatsoever on this game, I will not spend my money here any longer. I could not get this to run on my Vista 64 system, posted my quandary in the forums and sent an email to support. No responses at all.
I looked on other forums and it seems it takes a lot of work to get this game running decently. It's a game I really want to play but no support from GOG or the IL-2 forum here means all I have is a (rather nice) PDF aircraft manual. Ah well, guess I'll tone down my 20+ purchases/month down to about (maybe) 1 or 2, if that.

Uninstall that POS Vista for christ's sake and install a decent OS.

Dear God, don't say Win 7. My guess is it's the crap games from 1C Company, as the Theatre of War games don't run for me either. Chalk it up to incompetent Eastern European developers, huh?
I never personally ran Vista on any home system, so I can't help you. There's a new 4.10.1 patch out. But really, that operating system is garbage. I'm not sure how much support you can get for it. I don't think GoG even cares about Vista at all.
IL-2 runs without any problems on my Vista 64-bit machine. I didn't have to tweak anything at all, just download the installer from GOG, install and play. Perhaps if you could describe the specific problem you have with the game in detail, I or some other forum member could help you fix that.
I run XP but most people I know run GOG games in Win 7 without issues.

IL 2 is a plug and play game on XP and 32bit systems, which is what it was designed for.

I am running Windows7 and used the GOG Downloader to download IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946. It works flawlessly on my system. I have to agree with the above posters, dump Vista (WAY too many problems in my opinion) and get Win7. I've been running it for about a year and it is so much better than Vista. I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but Win7 will solve a lot of your compatibility issues.
I'll have to try this in a few days. Bought IL-2 a while back (but haven't got around to actually playing it yet, as with most of my purchases) and I'm running Vista 64.

BTW, KOTOR doesn't run on Win7 but runs just fine on Vista...

Have you tried killing Explorer.exe? It how I get a number of old games to play correctly. Need to use a batch file

taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe
start /w GAME.exe
pause
start explorer.exe

Just a thought...

See if putting it another location instead of Program Files helps.
I've heard that can be a problem.

Umm i have KOTOR on steam and works on Win7 64 bit fine :)
Same here. Windows 7 64-bit, totally stable. Yeah, doubt those "Eastern Europeans" are the problem here.
I had the DVD IL2 1946 until my DVD drive messed up and am glad GOG has it. Both the DVD and GOG version ran fine on my system and it's not that great; Win7 2.3 ghz dual core, 8gb ram Intel graphics card and on board audio.
There's a way in Win7 (don't know about Vista) that you can start the computer as administrator. It's a hidden account and "they" say to only use it for diagnosing problems but I've used it for a while with no problems. Games install and run fine without worrying about any UAC conflicts.
I run the DVD version of IL2 1946 on Win 7 64bit and it works flawlessy.
