Played on a Linux laptop with no issues, so installed in on my Win 10 laptop. Started up a new game to make sure it works correctly. Appeared in the standard tavern, did the dialog, town guy walks off and... all the animation ceased, but sound continued. Nothing happened. Clicked with mouse, and circling cursor appeared, and then "Program has stopped functioning (or such)".

Have rebooted, and tried again, same issue. I have successfully loaded up a saved game from the linux box, so I know the program itself can function correctly. It just can't start a new game.

Having Exactly the same issue on Windows 10 tried a number of recommended ways to correct it without success...
I suspect this has something to do with maps not loading in windows, I installed the game on my XPSP3 pc and it ran even past the tavern dialog! but there were no maps just a blank sheet though all the characters were there, as an experiment I also installed the Classic edition of Icewind dale on the same pc and that seems to work fine maps and all. I may try it on my Win10pc to see if it works there as well...
but I would much rather be able to play the enhanced edition...
This should fix it seems to be related to intel grafics and the Baldur.lua file in the game folder in documents, the game runs fine now for me now I've replaced the file.. go to:

"If you have a Mobile Intel 4 series or Intel HD 3000 graphics chipset and your game crashes on launch"

at the bottom of this page on beamdog:

I could'nt give a complete link above the forum wont allow me but it should be enough to get you there .-)

I do have Intel integrated grpahics

I tried it and got "Could not compile DirectX shaders" error. I even checked the files properties, and did 'don't block' when it mentioned that the file came from another computer and might be blocked.

I never got that message...

Not entirely certain what you've done there, the file seems to have a problem with downloading so I right clicked the link and "save as" to my download folder then copied and pasted it to the icewind dale folder in "my documents" replacing the original file... it works fine for me, currently just completed Dragons Eye and about to embark on the Severed Hand quest...

I also installed the same file to my XPpc (prefer the screen size) and it resolved the map issue suprisingly (nothing ventured nothing gained) and played the game on there and despite the fact it has ATI graphics it still worked fine, except for an issue with explosions which is cleary related to grafics, but i dont know enough about it to fix the issue though its not catastrophic...

A new clean Stand alone install for IWD using the backup download (recently downloaded) from gog in both cases...

Windows 10 latest version, 5 year old Lenovo Thinkpad with intel graphics and XP home(clean install) on an old old HP laptop any game that will run fine on XP I run on this..

I wish you luck .-)
