Other than cures like Mummy's tea and healing potions I never seem to use any of them - which do you you think are worth remembering in certain situations and which should I just sell?

I was thinking maybe Intelligence boosting spells were a bit useless but I just found out you can use them to scribe more spells in your book per level than your int would normally allow - so there's that

Is there any point in Wis boosts though?

Anything, like potions of fortitude, that give you temp HP boosts seem like a liability because you could just randomly die when they wear off if your HP is so low you're only alive on the bonus they give

What are your opinions?
Potions of Invisibility are great for guaranteed backstabs with your thief when you don't have time or opportunity to Hide in Shadows.
Potions of Master Thievery and Perception are useful for difficult locks.
Potions of Genius to increase odds of scribing spells if you're not the type of gamer to save and load everytime you fail. I think Potions of Wisdom help too. At least I remember they were useful for something.
Potions of Giant Strength for particularly difficult fights.
Potions of Speed: ditto, if you don't have the Haste spell.
Personally, I usually suffer from the "I'll just save these for later for a bigger fight" syndrome, and always carry around a lot of spare potions that I never end up using, but that said I do think Oil of Speed, for example, can be useful if your arcane spellcaster runs out of memorised haste spells. I also like Potion of Heroism, as it gives nice bonuses to HP and AC, but any potion which boosts AC is useful in my book. Potion of Invisibility is a must if you want to perform backstabs during a battle, Potion of Genius is useful if you're playing "hardcore" and don't want to resort to reloading if your mage or bard fails to scribe a spell. Potion of Freedom also comes in handy if you want to prevent your fighters from being affected by the Web cast by your party (if you're using such tactics) And let us not forget the potion which has the same effect as the Fireball spell (the name escapes me), those can be really neat as well, as anyone can throw them around. I'm sure there are more, but those are the ones I remember using most of the time.

EDIT: Oh yeah, how could I forget about the various strength boosting potions. One of the most important buffs for though fights.

Thanks for your replies - I was surprised at how little there was of actual opinions about potions out there - most where just lists of the potion description text, although, thinking about it, maybe I should have checked for something similar for Baulders Gate as most of the info would be pretty interchangeable...

And potions that you defiantly think are trash though? (other than the fake ones, obviously)

To tell you the truth though, I don't go in much for buffs generally, if I had a spell slot for either a buff spell or a spell I could chuck at a gribblie's head I'd go for the offensive one almost all the time!

Cheers
Like those above, I tend to hold onto them. Potions are worth what -- 500 gold or something crazy? So I can open a lock and get 200 gold worth of goods? That's the way it often seems, anyway.

I do hold onto a few for upping defense and offense for really tough fights. They can get you out of a jam if you're fighting things you probably ought not to be.

The trick with DnD is that everything is rolled with dice. So if you are increasing your rolls by 10% for a tough fight, it's just as easy to reload a save and fight it again. Your rolls might be 10% better or more just by chance.

I'm VERY slow on BG and IWD games b/c of this. I'd rather reload 50 times than use a stupid potion.

Don't be like me. Use your potions and have enough time to go enjoy the outdoors.
Potions of Agility and Fortitude aren't useful if you have maxed out your characters' states in DEX and CON. My characters who need strength usually have it in excess of 18, so Potions of Strength aren't helpful. Potion of Defense could be useful very early before your party acquires good equipment, but it mostly worthless through most of the game. I can't find a use for Potion of Stone Form either. Never found a use for Potion of Infravision.

Some potions are useful for such a small number of situations that I end up saving them and never using them. There may be a time where I want the +5 to saves from the Potion of Invulnerability- it has to be a situation though were a general +5 to saves is beneficial but AC isn't so important. Possible but it doesn't seem to come up. Potion of Absorption would be useful with a nasty area or boss that makes heavy use of lightning bolts or a crushing weapon- rare situations.

Potion of Mind Focusing is nice- the stat boosts are good to help AC and to help thief skills. A WIS boost from the Potion of Insight gives a saving throw bonus against mind-affecting attacks- and for what it's worth, it will boost a character's Lore percentage.
