How do I learn spells with a Cleric, specifically read/memorize them. I've got some level one scrolls I found but I can't seem to get my Cleric to read them. I realize he needs to rest in order to memorize them but I can't even get him to read the damn things. :D Am I missing something REALLY obvious?

Clerics can cast from scrolls, but do not add them to their spell books by memorizing the way mages do. I believe the scroll has to be put into one of the Quick Slots on the inventory screen in order to be cast. Hope that helps, I'm on my first run-through, so I'm sure there are others that know better than me. :)

ANYTHING helps. Thanks for the quick answer. I feel kind of silly asking it.
It seems there are a lot of us with the same issues, probably because of the promo being offered on the DnD titles. :P

I'm having a lot of trouble, myself, playing IWD (1), but these games are supposed to be hard and I'm more than willing to learn. So far, the only way I can have my cleric cast spells they don't know from the start is to assign them to quick slots and use them that way, but I don't know whether there's a way they can permanently learn them.

Hopefully an IWD veteran can answer your question better than me...
Clerics, Druids, Bards, or Sorcerers can only learn new spells when the level up.
They cast the spells that their class allows, from the quick slots, the way you are doing it.
Only Wizards learn new spells from scrolls.

Unlike Mages, Clerics don't learn spells from scrolls. They automatically know all spells of a certain level, once they reach the required class level (for example, 3rd level for all 2nd level Cleric spells).

To memorize a spell, open your spellbook, and then click on the spell you want to use. This will add the spell to the empty slot on the other side. You then need to rest, for the spell to become castable.

Just remember, that the slot represents one instance of the spell. If you want to cast a spell several times, you need to memorize it several times.

Edit: ...and ninja'd while I was typing.

Not quite. In IWD1, Bards learn spells the same way Wizards do: by memorizing from scrolls.
Sounds to me like Clerics are smarter than everyone else. :P They don't need to learn, they already know it. Guess I'll just tell my boy Rasputin to go ahead and sell that crap, he doesn't need them!

I love this game. So much bloodier than the other DD titles. I love those too, but more killing in this one right off the bat. No need to go into some district, just look around, shit to kill. It reminds me of Detroit.
Hold on to some of the useful spell scrolls, Rasputin (dig the name) can still use them to cast. If there is anything I've learned so far, it's you can always use more healing spells.

Well, technically, Clerics get all their spells automatically at level up because their gods provide them with their power in exchange for their faith and prayers or at least according to D&D/FR lore; same for Druids, they draw their powers from nature which is all around them, or some such. Wizards and Bards don't necessarily follow any faith, they just simply study the arcane arts, and that's the reason why Clerics/Druids use their WIS for memorising spells and Wizards/Bards use their INT. Holding on to some of the scrolls can be useful, since this way you can free up some spell slots.

Anyway, glad to hear you're having a great time with the game, I've known the Infinity Engine games since I was 12-13, but IWD1 and 2 are the ones that I still get out and play now and then.
