This is more of a general IE question, in fact, in part, its a general D&D rules question but I'm playing IWD right now so I'll post it here
Does 'Speed Factor' of weapons just affect who gets to swing first in any given round? Other than 'If you hit and kill him first he won't get to hit you this round' - like first stike in M:TG or is there any deeper meaning? Is it ever correct to go for a less damaging weapon with a better speed factor? What if the charcter has multiple attacks?
Also about muliple attacks - I'm sure I read in a GameFAQs FAQ that because rangers get 2 attacks you should equip a second weapon in the off hand instead of a shield to take advantage of this - I don't think this is in any way right though - is it?
While I'm here constantly having to switch between one-handed sword + Shield to 2 handed bow for 4 of my 6 characters is driving me insane and pushing me away from the game a little bit - anyone know a mod that could help? If only a little bit, I don't want to make bows full on one-handed that would be too cheaty but at least allowing then to sit in you quick weapon slot but not be selectable until you take the shield off would help because at least then I'd only be moving the shields
Wow there was a lot there - ta in advance!

It's supposed to affect your initiative in the round, which can mean your character may attack earlier if the speed factor is lower. I'm not really sure if it's actually implemented in the game though. Whether it's worth it or not to go with a faster weapon that does less damage is up to your personal tastes.

Rangers get a 2nd attack if they have no shield equipped, yes. You can't actually equip an offhand weapon, which is why the devs implemented it in this fashion, but the second attack applies to one-handed or two-handed weapons.

I don't know of any mod to do this. This is why I use slings (since you can equip a shield with them) for almost all my characters. An advantage with slings is your character's damage modifier due to STR is added to the damage the sling inflicts. I only use bows with characters that don't equip shields.

Ah thanks for that - have 5 reps! well at least I won't have to worry about my ranger if he's not using a shield from now on - 3 chars swapping might just be bearable, have to see...
