Its been a very long time since I played IWD. Bought enhanced, yay good stuff.

My mage, no specific school, has 18 intelligence. Yet at lvl 1 he can only memorize 1 spell per day. Am I missing something? IWD is AD&D 2ed right? A mage should get bonus spells per day according to their intelligence?

No, that is not correct. Intelligence confers no bonus spells, only the amount of spells that may be learned, and the success rate of learning spells from scrolls. It does not work like Wisdom for clerics. One spell at level one is correct.
