Help!

I am stuck in the lower levels of Dorn's Deep. The computer keeps crashing...

I've tried the UK-only patch from Sorcerers.net which appeared to be specifically for this problem with no luck. I can play about 30-60 seconds before a crash occurs. Other than quicksaving every 10 seconds and gutting it out till I'm out of the danger zone, I need suggestions!

Mimo

(Running IWD1 on a Vista 64 bit machine with an ATI 5700 series graphics card. Using the G3 tweak pack and playing at one of the unlocked resolution settings... no widescreen or super high resolutions. And yes, I dislike Vista but hindsight is always 20/20. Files are not in a program files folder.)

Edit: Worst workaround ever... Installed and copied over my save games to a netbook. Went from a nice 23" screen to a tiny little 10". Almost as bad as the monitor I was using when I first played IWD! But no crashes on a 32bit 7 with integrated graphics yet.

I have exactly the same problem. The zone stutter then crash a few seconds after.
I'm on Windows XP SP3, Ati X1950Pro and an Intel Core 2 Duo E6300. Whether I use the Widescreen mod or not is inconsequential.
I'll try the Netbook solution, but it would be great if someone had a solution for this one :) .

Edit : in fact, it's in the Hall of Heroes in Dorn's Deep for me.

Hall of Heroes for me also. Made it through on the netbook and then transfered the game back to the desktop. Unfortunately it then crashed in a few moments later elsewhere.

The patch you downloaded was not intended for this place then. There's a real Lower Dorn's Deep later in game, and that's where the problem could have occurred normally. And I can't find anything about a crash in the Hall of Heroes. Have you installed the G3 tweaks on your netbook as well ? It could be an incompatibility of the GoG version with those ones, maybe ?

And play without unlimited arrow stacking? Ugh, 9 years later and I still remember how annoying it was to carry arrows in all my inventory slots...

Yeah, I've got the G3 tweaks on the netbook. I'll report back on whether it eventually crashes just like the desktop as I go past the Hall of Heroes.

Edit: No problems after 30 minutes of Chapter 5 action on the crappy little netbook. Couldn't go 2 minutes on the desktop in the same place. Getting tired of the little screen... Might have to find an old SVGA cable.

I tried playing on my netbook today, with a VGA cable for the resolution :D. It's an Eeepc 1005 HA-M. I had the strange stutter in the Hall of heroes until I killed the lich at the end of the corridor, but no crash at all. I'm going to see if this problem is reaparring later on my PC, but there's a problem nonetheless I think, with the stuttering happening on the PC and the Netbook.

I finished up Upper Dorn's Deep through Lower Dorn's Deep on the netbook and then transferred the save games back to the desktop. No problems since then. Just finished the main game (which I never did back in the day) and now I'm on to never seen areas of HoW!

Good luck to you! I hope for others sake, someone figures out how to avoid the computer crashes with a less ridiculous work around than we used. The Lich in the Hall of Heroes definitely started the problems, but they lasted well past that area for me.

Looking forward to surfacing for air in a few days, saying hi to the family, and then perhaps delving into another classic Infinity Engine game. Unless I can grab some friends for a little NWN1 action! Liked that even more than Diablo back in the day (blasphemy to some, I know).
