I'm a great fan of bards. Under the 3.5e rules in other games (Neverwinter Nights 2, Temple of Elemental Evil) you can buy or find medium armour that allows you to cast without a chance of failure. Casting Charm or Horror while close to the frontline is a useful way to throw the enemy into confusion and fighting amongst themselves. And then you can get stuck in with your warrior bard as a support tank.

So far I can't find any way to do this in IWD2. There is a feat that reduces your chance of spell failure by 5% each time you take it but three feats and still having a significant chance of spell failure in a chain shirt doesn't feel worth it. Am I stuck with my bard being a buff and wade in character (I always take Lingering Song)?

Try the Black Dragon Scale armour you can buy in the Wandering Village. It's +6 AC, +6 Max DEX bonus, 0 AC penalty and only 10% spell failure. It's light armour but it's better than chainmail +1 and MUCH better for casters.
