My level 2 thief / mage in Icewind Dale doesn't seem to be able to identify items using the Identify spell she has memorized. She can use Identify scrolls without any issue, but the game apparently refuses to recognize that she has the spell memorized & ready to cast (as in, she hasn't cast it yet, but has it prepared). Anyone have any idea what the issue is? She can use Magic Missile just fine.

Two things come to mind: your mage is an Invoker, which would make her opposition school Divination (the school that Identify belongs to). Though I doubt this is the case, since she's a Thief/Mage. And secondly, a memorized spell still cannot be cast until after resting. Has she rested, to make the spell ready?

She's a non-specialist. Resting *should* be working- I delete Magic Missile from the spell book (she only has a couple spell slots), replace with Identify and then rest. Identify has a bright icon in her spell book after resting, but dragging an unidentified object into her inventory, right-clicking for the description, and then selecting "identify" has the "Spell" option unselectable.

That's most odd. Identify is a first level spell, so any non-Invoker should be able to use it at any level. Do you have any other party member -- a bard perhaps -- who could Identify it... just to make sure it's not something peculiar going on with your mage/thief?
You don't happen to be wearing armor when you try to identify, do you?
Is she wearing any kind of armor? That will disable spell casting.
Ah, armor was the problem, thanks guys. I didn't get the "spells disabled" message I was used to from equipping Imoen with armor in Baldur's Gate 2, so I didn't realize there was an issue.
