Hi, I followed this excellent guide provided here and modded the game. With the widescreen mod I had some problems: What is a good balanced resolution to set? I have a very good monitor which supports up to 2560 x 1440. but when I tried that resolution, the text became unreadable and the characters tiny (Lilliputian). I Tried uninstalling the mod and changing to a lower setting but then it just goes back to the original non widescreen setting, so looks like I need to start again from the beginning. What resolution offers A good balance for a modern system? Also, when using the widescreen mod, do I need so worry about the initial settings using the config tool provided by the game? Thanks in advance.

A WQHD resolution of 2560x1440 is much to high. I'd try a standard HD 720 resolution which is 1280x720. It offers the same native aspect ratio (16:9) as your monitor and should therefore be flawlessly scaled.

A good balance performance wise is dependent on your hardware, but if WHQD runs, every smaller resolution will as well.
Visually speaking, it depends an your screensize and distance to the monitor and not to forget your acuteness of vision (a factor some older gamers have to get used to). I'd experiment a bit and the suggested HD res seems like a good start.

Thanks so much, will try the vanilla with the widescreen mod first before uninstalling and going back to the beginning and waiting till after all the other mods have been installed.
UPDATE: I tried running the WS mod at 1280x720 but just ended up with a non-widescreen game (a small box on the center of the screen). Is there something I'm missing? Maybe in the games own config utility?

Yeah. At least with AMD cards, you'll need to go to catalyst control center and.. damn, my control center is in finnish.. something digital screens and then enable gpu-scaling.

Same with nvidia but with different name.

You know, you can change the language of the CCC in preferences. ;)

I did not know that! Wow, makes things so much easier. +1 for you. :D
So for AMD it's My Digital Flat-Panels/Properties and tick Enable GPU up-scaling.
